A three-day training for heads of investigative units of the National Police specializing in crimes committed by and involving children has begun today at Lviv State University of Internal Affairs. The law enforcement officers will be trained to interview girls and boys who have been sexually abused.

The event is part of a joint project of the OSCE Support Program for Ukraine, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and the National Police of Ukraine.

The training aims to improve the professional skills of investigators in working with children who have experienced sexual or other forms of violence. Particular attention is focused on studying the psychological aspects of trauma, methods of conducting sensitive interviews, and preventing re-traumatization of victims.

Before the training began, the rector of Lviv State University of Internal Affairs, Dmytro Shvets, addressed the participants.

"The topic of today's training is extremely relevant in the context of modern threats. The knowledge gained will be useful both for further professional activities and for effective counteraction to crimes in the field of sexual abuse of children and other forms of cruelty, which, unfortunately, still occur. The statistics in this area are truly alarming. Thanks to the support of international partners, the training participants will work out important algorithms of actions that each of them will be able to apply in their practice and, at the same time, share their own experience," said Dmytro Shvets.

Serghiy Hrynenko, Senior Project Manager of the Human Security Component of the OSCE Support Program for Ukraine, also took the floor.

"We were happy to organize this event here, at Lviv State University of Internal Affairs. A special feature is the Green Room, which is used not only for educational purposes, but also for interviewing children who have suffered from crimes. We hope that within three days we will be able to achieve the results we are striving for," said Serhiy Hrynenko.

During the training, participants will learn about the best international practices, including the British model of cognitive interviewing "P.E.A.C.E.", the NICHD protocol, as well as Ukrainian developments in the field of friendly justice. The training will combine theoretical training with practical tasks: role-playing interviews, group work, and discussion of real cases.

Friendly Sitting Volleyball Tournament Held at Lviv State University of Internal Affairs

Recently, the sports complex of the Lviv State University of Internal Affairs hosted a friendly sitting volleyball match involving Ukrainian defenders. The event was organized as part of the «Friendly Support» project initiated by the Department of Education, Science, and Sports of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.

Participants included military personnel undergoing physical and psychological rehabilitation at the «Halychyna» Center.

Among them was 41-year-old veteran Mykola Melnyk. From the early days of the full-scale Russian invasion, he joined the Territorial Defense Forces and participated in the evacuation of civilians from the occupied territories of Kyiv region. In the summer of 2022, he joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine and served in the Zaporizhzhia direction. During one of the combat missions, he sustained a severe injury as a result of an FPV drone strike.

Now, the veteran is undergoing a long and difficult rehabilitation. He is determined to keep fighting and living — both for himself and for his fallen comrades.

Before the war, Mykola had a rich sports background and actively competed in arm wrestling. Today, despite his injuries, he continues to train with the «Lviv Lions» sports club and recently received the title of Candidate for Master of Sports in arm wrestling.

At the Halychyna Rehabilitation Center, he learned about the sitting volleyball tournaments regularly held at Lviv State University of Internal Affairs.

«Engaging in sports, particularly volleyball, provides a therapeutic escape from the surrounding realities. Sports are beneficial for everyone, but after injuries they become essential. They help build endurance, and the rehabilitation center encourages us to stay active», said Mykola Melnyk.

The event was also attended by the Rector's Assistant and war veteran Bohdan Bilinskii, as well as volunteers from the charity foundation «With an Angel on the Shoulder». One of the volunteers, Khrystyna Yusiv, has long supported wounded soldiers.

«Since the beginning of the full-scale war, we've shifted our focus — from helping children with cancer to supporting the military. We aim to involve them in various activities to facilitate social reintegration, which is a key aspect of rehabilitation. Today's sitting volleyball session is important not only for the enjoyment it brings, but also because many soldiers are learning to feel and control their bodies in new ways», noted the volunteer.

The match lasted nearly two hours. Each successful round was met with applause, and participants exchanged emotions and supported one another.

Such activities are vital for rebuilding strength, restoring confidence, and inspiring resilience. Despite the trauma, loss, and long path of recovery, these soldiers continue to live, support each other, and inspire hope. The Lviv State University of Internal Affairs remains committed to helping Ukraine's defenders by actively promoting veteran sports initiatives.

The workshop was led by Kateryna Shapovalova, Deputy Head of the Public Relations Unit, and police inspector Mariia Yuzefiv. During the discussion, the speakers debunked ten of the most widespread myths concerning the use of seat belts.

In addition, the cadets viewed an educational video highlighting the importance of properly fastening a seat belt while driving.

The patrol officers emphasized that every passenger in a vehicle must fasten a seat belt, regardless of seating position, as it significantly increases the chances of survival in the event of a traffic accident.

Special attention was also given to the technical condition of vehicles. The officers outlined which mechanical faults permit vehicle operation and which ones render it strictly prohibited.

«Road safety depends not only on the driver's skills, but also on the proper functioning of brakes, tires, and other vehicle systems», noted Mariia Yuzefiv.

Moreover, as part of the «Safety. Road. Life» project, police officers reminded cadets of the fundamental rules for safe vehicle operation. They also provided a detailed overview of the responsibilities of drivers and pedestrians, while underlining the legal liability associated with traffic rule violations.

Heroes Who Shape Ukraine's Future: Patriotic Events Held at Lviv State University of Internal Affairs with War Veterans

To mark Heroes' Day, Lviv State University of Internal Affairs (LvSUIA) hosted a roundtable discussion featuring veterans of the ongoing war and university staff who have defended Ukraine from the enemy.

University Rector, Police Colonel Dmytro Shvets, presented various projects being implemented at LvSUIA aimed at supporting Ukrainian defenders. He also expressed his gratitude to the veterans for their active role in the military-patriotic education of the next generation of law enforcement officers.

Additionally, a ceremonial event was held at the university to celebrate Heroes' Day, with Ukrainian defenders invited to take part.

Participants joined together in singing the National Anthem of Ukraine. This was followed by a moment of silence to honor all fallen Heroes, especially LvSUIA alumni who gave their lives for Ukraine's freedom and independence.

University head Dmytro Shvets addressed those present, expressing deep gratitude to all Ukrainian defenders – men and women – for their tireless struggle, strength, and resilience.

Also speaking at the event was war veteran Vasyl Kurylovych, a fighter from the 14th Operational Brigade of the National Guard "Chervona Kalyna."

"I am not a hero. I'm an ordinary Ukrainian, like hundreds of thousands of others who stood up to defend our homeland. We didn't want the occupier to trample our land. We know what war is: it's pain, blood, tears, and a mother's silent prayer as she waits for her son to return home. Sadly, not everyone does. The true heroes are those who stayed there. And we must remember them, because they will live on as long as we don't forget them," the veteran said.

During the event, attendees remembered Ukraine's Heroes – LvSUIA alumni Yurii Zhukovets and Ihor Dykun, who continue to defend the country on the frontlines, as well as Taras Bobanych, who was killed in action during a combat mission in Kharkiv region in April 2022, bravely shielding his comrades.

Cadets, students, and invited guests delivered moving performances of patriotic songs, poetry, and dance compositions.

At the end of the event, university leadership, veterans, and students laid flowers at the grave of Hero of Ukraine and LvSUIA graduate Taras Bobanych and honored his memory with a moment of silence.
