The department was formed in accordance with the order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine dated 07.07.2008 №328 "On organizational and staff changes of higher educational institutions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine" due to the reorganization of the departments of Criminal Law and Criminology, Criminal Procedure and Criminology. The department provides teaching of criminal law disciplines at the Faculty of Law and in the Center of postgraduate education, extra-mural and distance learning.
The department is headed by Candidate of Law, Associate Professor V. V. Lutsyk.

Scientific and pedagogical staff of the department provides teaching, exams and tests in the disciplines assigned to the department from the second to the sixth year, manage production and pedagogical practice and ensure the organization of state certification of applicants for higher education. Scientific and pedagogical staff who have scientific degrees and academic titles guide postgraduate students and applicants, assist students in writing term papers and master's theses.
The scientific and pedagogical staff of the department works on the research of a specific scientific topic, has scientific achievements, in particular, published a number of textbooks, manuals, monographs, lecture courses, methodical materials to ensure the educational process, prepared scientific conclusions on the requests of the Constitutional Court. There is a constant scientific cooperation with GUNP in Lviv region, institutions of higher education of the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.
Every year the department conducts scientific and practical events in which the scientific and pedagogical staff of the department takes an active part. A student scientific circle is organized and works at the department. Circle members, under the guidance of scientific and pedagogical staff of the department, work on the research of a specific scientific topic, have certain achievements: publications, prizes at university and national scientific events.
In general, educational and methodical, scientific work carried out at the Department of Criminal Law, aimed at further improving the professional skills of scientific and pedagogical workers, methodological support of the educational process, which ultimately contributes to improving the training of specialists in "Law".
