“We speak against violence”: this topic was the subject of another online lesson for sophomores of Faculty №3. Deputy Head of Public Relations Unit of Lviv Region Patrol Police Vira PROTSIV talked to the cadets. She invited young people to discuss myths and stereotypes about domestic violence.

“Cases of domestic violence will be one of the most difficult in your service. They will evoke different emotions in you, but you should always be guided only by the current legislation, “said Patrol Police representative. “And this topic is not a problem of individual family, it is a problem of the whole society”

She noted that women and children mostly suffer from domestic violence. This is about 80% of all cases. However, men can also become victims of violence, and a son or daughter can be the perpetrator. Arriving on a call, police must first conduct a risk assessment to determine the degree of danger to the victim. Specially defined list of questions helps to do this. A police officer asks if the perpetrator threatened to kill, if he used sharp objects, if he didn’t try to strangle…

She told the cadets how to communicate with the victim of domestic violence. In particular, she advised to listen carefully and have no doubts about the words of the victim. And - under no circumstances to blame for what happened. It is important not to force to speak, and to try, first of all, to cause trust.

Classes for abusers were also discussed during the lesson. After all, it is important that the person who committed domestic violence realizes that such actions are not the norm and could change his attitude to family relations.

Cadets actively participated in discussion, shared their own thoughts, observations and stories.

At the end of the meeting, Vira PROTSIV offered to watch a video about the cyclical nature of domestic violence. She also thanked the cadets for their persistence and activity, despite the distance learning.

It should be noted that lesson was initiated by Head of Department of Actualization and Practical Training of Lviv State University of Internal Affairs Oleksandra ZAKHAROVA. Such online meetings of practitioners with cadets are held every Tuesday. Representatives of various police departments share their experience and secrets of professional skills with students of the university.
